What is the Lap-Band?
The Lap-Band is a device with an adjustable silicone ring. It is placed around the top part of the stomach, creating a small 1-2 ounce pouch. It moderately restricts the volume and type of foods able to be eaten.
It is the only weight loss procedure that is adjustable, and completely reversible. It delays the speed of food emptying into the stomach, and since it is placed near the stomach "I am full" nerves, it creates a feeling of fullness after only a few bites.
The Lap-Band can help me achieve 60% weight loss. This means I could go from my current 440 pounds, slower than gastric bypass, thus reducing the chance of the "excess skin" that some people my size get after losing their weight. It does require a little more effort that other weight loss procedures, because it is a more permanent solution than other surgeries. I am fully committed to losing this extra baggage, because of the many benefits that being healthy and un-heavy provides.
I must consume less than 800 calories a day at first, then after I reach my goal, I can up my intake until I plateau, or maintain my current weight.
